The Bubble Barrier Vila do Conde was officially launched on November 25th, and Lula Gigante was responsible for the video coverage. It’s a pleasure to be part of such an important project in the era of climate transition.

The Bubble Barrier Vila do Conde was officially launched yesterday and is already collecting plastic and waste in the Ave river, in the city of Vila do Conde in Portugal!
The system was co-designed and implemented by our partners The Great Bubble Barrier and Institute for Sustainable Energy – University of Malta, in partnership with Câmara Municipal de Vila do Conde and with the key support of Deltares and CIIMAR / CIMAR Associate Laboratory.
The inauguration ceremony was attended the Portuguese State Secretary for the Sea, Dr. José Maria Costa, by the Vice-President of the Portuguese Environmental Agency (Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente), Dr. José Pimenta Machado, by the Mayor of Vila do Conde, Dr. Vítor Manuel Moreira Costa, by the Port Captaincy Commander Monica Martins (Autoridade Marítima Nacional), by the Director of Docapesca – Portos e Lotas, S.A. Dr. Nuno Coelho and by Lipor CEO, Dr. Fernando Leite.
It was a very important milestone from the MAELSTROM team: after almost three years of intense work, we could finally celebrate with our key stakeholders the deployment of our second technology for #marinelitter removal!
Within the process, it was fantastic to see how our international collaboration-based project met the local support and commitment from the city of Vila do Conde and from Portuguese Authorities, making it possible to install a permanent Bubble Barrier in the Ave river.
We couldn’t be more grateful for the support received and we believe that the level of engagement seen is itself a reason to celebrate and continuing approaching #internationalcooperation and local engagement as two sides of the same coin, when working towards long-term successful and sustainable initiatives.
But this is not all for the MAELSTROM team: in the following months we will be monitoring the type and quantity of waste collected and assessing the #environmental impact of the Bubble Barrier in Ave’s riverine ecosystem.

Estudantes de diversos países, com idades compreendidas entre 15 e 17 anos, tiveram a oportunidade de criar o filme “Cinema Climantopia” com a colaboração de equipas profissionais. O desafio, proposto pela Fábrica Ciência Viva de Aveiro, consistiu em montar o filme a partir de imagens e sons colectados por diferentes grupos em locais diversos, todos com foco no turismo sustentável.
Intitulado Cinema Climantopia, o filme faz parte do projeto Erasmus+ EduCinema Clima TourAction, que utiliza a filmografia como uma ferramenta pedagógica e social na luta contra as mudanças climáticas. O objetivo foi promover a literacia climática entre os alunos envolvidos na produção do filme.
A primeira exibição aconteceu nas Canárias, e o filme irá circular noutros locais, como Outes, na região da Corunha. Este projeto visa ampliar o potencial da criatividade coletiva voltada para a ação climática (ODS 13) e enfatizar a importância da aprendizagem contínua (ODS 4).
Students representing various countries, aged 15 to 17, were afforded the opportunity to collaboratively produce the film titled Cinema Climantopia alongside professional teams. This initiative, proposed by the Fábrica Ciência Viva de Aveiro, entailed the assembly of a film derived from images and sounds gathered by distinct groups across diverse locations, with a central focus on sustainable tourism.
Cinema Climantopia is an integral part of the Erasmus+ EduCinema Clima TourAction project, which employs filmmaking as both a pedagogical and a social instrument in the efforts to combat climate change. The primary objective was to enhance climate literacy among the students engaged in the film’s production.
The inaugural screening occurred in the Canary Islands, with plans for subsequent showings in other venues, including Outes, located in the A Coruña region. This project aspires to broaden the horizons of collective creativity directed towards climate action (SDG 13) and to underscore the significance of lifelong learning (SDG 4).

Hoje reunimo-nos para a entrega dos certificados de conclusão do curso “Introdução à Edição de Vídeo”, promovido pelo CIIMAR / CIMAR Associate Laboratory e leccionado pela editora de vídeo Priscilla Fontoura. Durante este momento abriu-se espaço para a troca de comentários construtivos, no âmbito da apresentação dos vídeos finais produzidos por cada interveniente. Comunicar e saber comunicar ciência é uma realidade cada vez mais presente nestas Instituições de referência.

Aconteceu mais uma rodagem Lula Gigante que parte agora para a fase de pós-produção. A Universidade de Aveiro e a Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro olham para o presente e futuro da cultura científica e tecnológica com bons olhos, e nós alinhamo-nos a essa percepção.
A LULA GIGANTE esteve no seu habitat natural: na FÁBRICA DA CIÊNCIA VIVA em AVEIRO, o centro que leva ciência às crianças de todas as idades.

LULA GIGANTE @ SWR BARROSELAS METALFEAST 2022, from April 29th to 30th 2022
Finalmente, após dois anos de hiato sem festival por força da pandemia Covid-19, a equipa Lula Gigante, como tem sido costume, foi convidada a cobrir dois dias de festim. Apesar desta edição ser mais compacta e em modo pré-aquecimento para a do próximo ano, este SWR Barroselas Metalfeast 2022 foi especial pelo reencontro com amigos e conversas com artistas interessantes.
Finally, after a two-year hiatus without the festival due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lula Gigante’s team, as usual, was invited to cover two days of festivities. Despite this edition being more compact and in preheating mode for next year’s, this SWR Barroselas Metalfeast 2022 was special for the gathering with new/old friends and for the conversations with interesting artists.

Exposição patente no P.ARTES, Porto, de 25 de Maio a 21 de Junho de 2022, no âmbito do Prémio à Investigação Artística Aplicada uniMAD/ESMAD. Apresentação do foto livro O SLIDE, A CORTINA – Diálogos SIMBÓLICOS, por Priscilla Fontoura.
“Eu lia a minha inexistência nas roupas que a minha mãe tinha usado antes que eu me pudesse lembrar dela. Há uma espécie de estupefação em ver um ser familiar vestido de outro modo. (…) Para mim, a história é isso, o tempo que a minha mãe viveu antes de mim.”; afirmou Roland Barthes na sua obra derradeira “Câmara Clara” (1980).
Priscilla Fontoura também lê a sua inexistência a partir do que observa nas cortinas de casa dos seus pais, cada slide projetado possibilita uma exploração estética e uma viagem no tempo que não viveu.

“I could read my nonexistence in the clothes my mother had worn before I can remember her. There is a kind of stupefaction in seeing a familiar being dressed differently. (…) That is what the time when my mother was alive before me is – History.”; stated Roland Barthes in his great work Camera Lucida (1980).
Priscilla Fontoura also reads her nonexistence from what she observes on the curtains of her parents’ house, each projected slide allows an aesthetic exploration and a journey through time not lived.
Priscilla Fontoura tem vindo a exercer as suas funções enquanto realizadora, videógrafa, documentarista, músico e agente cultural há mais de uma década. É co-fundadora da Lula Gigante e fundadora da publicação Acordes de Quinta. A autora é Mestre em Cinema Documental pela Escola Superior Media Artes e Design – ESMAD e licenciada em Som e Imagem, pela Universidade Católica Portuguesa do Porto.
Priscilla Fontoura has been working as a director, videographer, documentary filmmaker, musician and cultural agent for over a decade. Co-founder of Lula gigante and founder of Acordes de Quinta webzine. The author holds a Master’s degree in Documentary Film from the School of Media Arts and Design – ESMAD and a degree in Sound and Image from the Catholic University of Porto.
