ESTOU VIVO GRAÇAS A ARISTIDES DE SOUSA MENDES
I AM ALIVE thanks to Aristides de Sousa Mendes é um curta-metragem documental realizado por Priscilla Fontoura que conta a história de um dos maiores heróis esquecidos do século XX. Como Cônsul-Geral de Portugal em Bordéus, França, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Sousa Mendes foi responsável por salvar a vida a milhares de pessoas do Holocausto. Fez-o ao emitir vistos para Portugal, contra as ordens directas do ditador português, António de Oliveira Salazar. Entre os destinatários dos vistos encontrava-se Salvador Dalí, cujas obras pós-guerra existem graças a Aristides de Sousa Mendes
O filme estabelece um paralelo entre a casa de Sousa Mendes, no interior de Portugal – um edifício que hoje se encontra em ruínas – e o esquecimento forçado do seu legado. Punido pelo governo português, nunca recebeu o reconhecimento que merecia. O ponto de partida do documentário é uma visita à casa, chamada Casa do Passal, onde nasceu o Cônsul. É aí que conhecemos os destinatários dos vistos de Sousa Mendes e os seus descendentes, que se deslocaram para prestar homenagem. A ocasião é a inauguração de uma instalação, “Work Towards Fairness”, criada por Eric Moed, um arquitecto de Nova Iorque cujo avô recebeu um visto de Aristides. A instalação de Moed inclui fotografias dos destinatários dos vistos e pretende ser um apelo para que a casa seja reconstruída.
Com os seus testemunhos e histórias familiares, os membros das famílias dos destinatários ajudam a reconstruir a memória de Aristides de Sousa Mendes e a restaurar o seu bom nome. Este filme sublinha a necessidade de reconstruir a única estrutura física em Portugal associada a Aristides de Sousa Mendes, a Casa do Passal, para que o nome de um dos maiores heróis do Mundo Ocidental possa ser restaurado no lugar que lhe é devido na história.

I AM ALIVE thanks to Aristides de Sousa Mendes is a short documentary film directed by Priscilla Fontoura that tells the story of one of the greatest forgotten heroes of the twentieth century. As the Portuguese Consul-General in Bordeaux, France, during World War II, Sousa Mendes was responsible for saving the lives of thousands of people from the Holocaust. He did this by issuing visas to Portugal, against the direct orders of the Portuguese dictator, António de Oliveira Salazar. Among the visa recipients was Salvador Dali, whose post-war paintings exist thanks to Aristides de Sousa Mendes.
The film establishes a parallel between the Sousa Mendes home in the Portuguese countryside – an edifice that today stands in ruins – and the forced oblivion of his legacy. Punished by the Portuguese government, he never received the recognition he deserved. The starting point of the documentary is a visit to the house, called Casa do Passal, where the Consul was born. There we meet Sousa Mendes visa recipients and their descendants who have come to render homage. The occasion is the opening of an installation, “Work Towards Fairness,” created by Eric Moed, a New York architect whose grandfather received a visa from Aristides. Moed’s installation includes photographs of the visa recipients and is meant as a plea for the house to be rebuilt.
With their testimonials and family stories, the visa recipient family members help to rebuild the memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and restore his good name. This film underlines the necessity of rebuilding the only physical structure in Portugal associated with Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Casa do Passal, so that the name of one of the greatest heroes in the Western World might be restored to its rightful place in history.
